Building the Perfect Chicken Coop – Everything Your Flock Needs 🏡🐔
Your chicken coop isn’t just a shelter—it’s their home, their fortress, and their egg-laying sanctuary. Building (or buying) the right coop can make or break your chicken-raising experience. Here’s how to make sure your feathered ladies are living in comfort and safety.
1. Location, Location, Location Pick a well-drained, shaded area if possible. Too much sun can overheat your chickens, while soggy ground invites mold and disease.
2. Coop Size & Layout Allow at least 3–4 square feet per hen inside the coop and 8–10 square feet in the outdoor run. Cramped birds = grumpy birds. Make sure there’s:
- Nesting boxes (1 per 3–4 hens)
- Perches for sleeping (off the ground)
- Ventilation – air flow is critical!
- Secure latches – raccoons are clever little burglars.
3. Bedding Basics Use pine shavings, straw, or sand—just skip cedar (it’s toxic to chickens). Clean bedding regularly to prevent odor and mites.
4. Predator Protection Foxes, hawks, raccoons, and even neighborhood dogs will try to make a meal out of your hens. Reinforce the coop and run with hardware cloth (not chicken wire), and bury it at least 12″ down to stop digging predators.
5. Automatic Extras Consider adding:
- An automatic coop door for stress-free mornings.
- A solar light for longer winter egg production.
- A rain barrel for a fresh water supply.
Investing in a solid coop upfront means fewer problems—and happier hens—down the road!
